Statement of the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea on the so-called “voting” in the temporarily occupied territory for amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n

It has long been a rule for the permanent authorities in the Russian Federation to cover up their crimes with referendums, shifting the responsibility for such crimes from the country’s political elite to the “people”. In 2014, we saw how a military operation was conducted and Ukrainian Crimea was occupied under the guise of a “referendum”.<\/p>\n

The nationwide vote on amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation to legitimize the continuation of the Russian President’s rule lasted until July 1, 2020. And although everyone already understood that the Kremlin knew the desired outcome before the vote started, during the week of June 25, 2020, Russians voted at polling stations, in yards, from cars; with Russian documents and Soviet-style passports.<\/p>\n

However, we would like to leave the issue of defending the Russian Constitution to Russian citizens and draw attention to the inclusion of the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula in the all-Russian vote. Holding a vote on amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by the occupying power is illegal from the point of view of international law, because the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol are integral parts of the territory of Ukraine and the Russian Federation as an occupying power has no sovereignty over them.<\/p>\n

“Any ‘results’ of such voting on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine will not be considered legitimate by either Ukraine or the international community. The provisions of the Constitution of the Russian Federation stating that actions aimed at alienating a part of the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as calls for such actions, are not allowed, have no legal significance in relation to the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as they are integral parts of the territory of Ukraine, not parts of the territory of the Russian Federation. From the point of view of international law, its basic principles, the UN Charter, the Russian Federation is not the sovereign of the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol and, accordingly, the so-called “incorporation” of this territory into the Russian Federation is illegal and has no legal consequences,” commented Anton Korynevych, Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.<\/p>\n

It should be reminded that the UN General Assembly in its resolution 68\/262 “Territorial integrity of Ukraine”, adopted on March 27, 2014, called on all states, international organizations and specialized agencies not to recognize any changes in the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on the basis of the so-called “referendum” held on March 16, 2014, and to refrain from any action or steps that could be construed as recognizing any such changed status<\/p>\n
