On October 17, 1883, Petro Bolbochan was born in the village of Hidzheu, Khotyn County, Bessarabia Governorate (now Yarivka village in Chernivtsi region), the son of Orthodox priest Fedir Bolbochan and his wife, Yelyzaveta. Petro Bolbochan became a prominent figure during the Ukrainian Revolution, a colonel in the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR) Army, and the leader of the Crimea Operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bolbochan family was not wealthy, leaving Petro with the choice of either following in his father\u2019s footsteps as a priest or pursuing a military career. Despite spending two years in seminary, Petro eventually enrolled in the Chuhuiv Infantry Junker School, where most of his fellow students were Ukrainians. There, he organized a “Ukrainian circle to spread the native word,” which was soon banned, and Petro received a reprimand for his involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the eve of World War I, Petro was appointed adjutant of the 38th Infantry Regiment under the command of Mykola Eigel. During the war, Bolbochan participated in a total of 37 battles, was wounded, and received several military honors, including the Orders of St. Stanislaus (2nd and 3rd classes) and the Orders of St. Anna (2nd and 3rd classes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the fall of the imperial government and the beginning of the Ukrainian Revolution, Bolbochan supported the Central Rada of Ukraine and began organizing Ukrainian military units, including the 1st Ukrainian Bohdan Khmelnytsky Regiment. In November 1917, he took command of the 1st Ukrainian Republican Regiment. However, actions by Bolsheviks within the soldiers’ committee undermined the combat readiness of these regiments, which posed a threat to the Bolsheviks due to their “Ukrainization.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The remaining forces were reorganized into the 2nd Zaporizhzhia Infantry Battalion under Bolbochan\u2019s command. He played a key role in suppressing the Bolshevik uprising at the Arsenal and defending Kyiv against Bolshevik forces. Later, he participated in liberating the Left Bank and southern Ukraine from the Bolshevik army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bolbochan\u2019s most notable achievement was the Crimea Operation in April 1918, when Ukrainian troops under his command set out to liberate the peninsula from Bolshevik forces. The operation aimed to secure control over Crimea and the Black Sea Fleet, ensuring maritime security and protecting Ukraine from the Bolshevik threat. Bolbochan\u2019s Crimean Group, consisting of about 9,000 troops, launched a swift offensive, successfully breaking through the Sivash and defeating Bolshevik defenses at Chonhar. The group was bolstered by volunteers from mainland Ukraine and Crimean Tatar volunteer formations. As a result, cities like Dzhankoi, Simferopol, and Bakhchysarai were liberated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the success, the operation was halted near Sevastopol by order of the UNR leadership to avoid conflict with Germany, which had its own interests in Crimea. Bolbochan was ordered to withdraw from the peninsula, and Crimea eventually came under German control. However, on April 29, 1918, the ships of the Black Sea Fleet raised Ukrainian flags, marking a symbolic victory for the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bolbochan supported the Anti-Hetman Uprising led by the Directorate and later commanded the Left-Bank Group of the UNR Army. In early 1919, as the Bolsheviks launched a large-scale offensive, Bolbochan\u2019s troops were forced to retreat from much of the Left Bank, leading to his removal from command and accusations of treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In May, Bolbochan was released following pressure from officers and soldiers but was imprisoned again in June. Colonel Havryshko attempted to persuade Bolbochan to take unauthorized command of the Zaporizhzhia Corps and issued an order to that effect. Bolbochan was court-martialed and sentenced to death for attempting a coup. Loyal units offered to stage a rebellion to defend him, but he refused. On June 28, 1919, Bolbochan was executed by firing squad at the Balyn station in Khmelnytskyi region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Petro Bolbochan was a staunch advocate for building a strong Ukrainian army. He emphasized, \u201cWe are fighting for an independent democratic Ukrainian Republic, not for a unified Russia, whether it be monarchist or Bolshevik.\u201d Bolbochan held great authority among military personnel and had a talent for organization, which led the Bolsheviks to place a bounty on his head. He survived two assassination attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, numerous streets across Ukraine, from Lviv to Kharkiv, are named in honor of Colonel Petro Bolbochan, and many memorials have been erected in his memory. The 3rd Operational Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine proudly bears his name.
