This day serves as a crucial reminder to the global community that freedom of speech is a fundamental right that demands protection. Its importance grows in conditions of illegal occupation, where every truthful word becomes a beacon amid the darkness of propaganda and deceit. This day underscores the sacrifices of those who have faced repression for their courage to speak the truth. Every unpunished crime against journalists sets a dangerous precedent that threatens democratic values and freedoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the very beginning of Crimea\u2019s occupation, Russian forces launched a total assault on freedom of speech and began persecuting independent journalists. These efforts aimed to eradicate alternative sources of information, leaving Crimean residents isolated from fair and objective reporting. According to human rights advocates, at least 21 journalists have faced politically motivated persecution in occupied Crimea, with some receiving harsh sentences based on fabricated charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Osman Arifmemetov, Oleksii Bessarabov, Iryna Danylovych, Tymur Ibrahimov, and others \u2014 these names have become symbols of courage and resilience in the fight for truth. Each faced threats, illegal searches, detentions, and harsh imprisonment for their work. Their stories testify to the dangers of being a journalist in places where freedom of speech is equated with the crime of extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mission expresses its gratitude for the dedication and fearless work of each journalist under threat and calls on the international community to unite in defending journalists\u2019 rights. Today, when every word of truth from occupied territories holds such significance, supporting independent media and protecting journalists is a shared responsibility. We believe that freedom of speech will soon return to all occupied territories, and those who have fought for truth will be able to work safely and in service to society.
