Today, on November 8, Territorial Defense fighter Hennadii “Tor” Afanasiev would have turned 34. However, he was killed in action against Russian occupiers near the village of Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, as reported on December 21, 2022.
Hennadii was born in Simferopol, in Ukrainian Crimea. Until the age of 11, he lived in Odesa, then moved back to Crimea with his mother.
He attended Gymnasium No. 3 named after Anton Makarenko. In 2012, he graduated from Tauvrida National University named after Vernadsky with a degree in Law. For a year and a half, he worked as a photographer.
During the occupation of Crimea in 2014, he participated in protests. On May 9 of the same year, Hennadii was arrested, accused of terrorism, and sentenced to seven years in prison. While in captivity, he endured torture and psychological pressure.
In June 2016, Hennadii returned to Ukraine as part of a prisoner exchange. He lived in Kyiv, worked in IT, and conducted free courses for veterans. He also authored a book about his captivity, Rising After the Fall. He got married, adored animals, and loved books.
