On January 22, 2025, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the Russian Federation’s use of disinformation and historical falsification to justify its aggression against Ukraine. The document emphasizes that Russia’s war against Ukraine is a continuation of Russia’s imperialist policy, including previous acts of aggression, such as the occupation of Crimea in 2014.
The resolution states that Russia’s aggression is accompanied by massive disinformation campaigns aimed at justifying its crimes, denying Ukraine’s statehood, and manipulating international public opinion. Special attention is given to Russia’s historical revisionism, which distorts historical interpretations as a tool for ideological mobilization. The European Parliament called for honoring the memory of victims of Soviet terror, including the tragedies of the Holodomor, the Gulag system, and the deportation of the Crimean Tatar Indigenous people.
The resolution also mentions contemporary crimes committed by Russia in the occupied territory, including the destruction of Holodomor memorials and the restoration of Soviet symbols such as Lenin monuments. These actions are seen as part of Russia’s efforts to erase Ukraine’s cultural identity.
The European Parliament called on the EU and its member states to intensify efforts to combat Russian disinformation, which threatens Europe’s unity and collective historical memory. The resolution also calls for establishing a special tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression against Ukraine and supporting independent media and research initiatives aimed at exposing Russian propaganda.
The European Parliament further emphasized the need to promote education and research on shared European history to help counter attempts at manipulation and historical revisionism.
