On December 6, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Armed Forces, a holiday that has always been marked with pride and respect since its inception. This day took on even greater significance in 2014, following the beginning of Russia’s armed aggression against the Ukrainian people and state. By 2022, with the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it became a nationwide observance.
Today is a day to honor those who fight for the future of the entire civilized world. It is a day for those on the front lines, destroying the enemy and enduring the heat of battle with the occupier, doing everything to ensure our country stands firm and Ukrainians live freely on their land.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are the faith and hope of every Ukrainian. They are Ukraine’s impenetrable shield and mighty sword. The brave warriors of the Ukrainian army—the finest sons and daughters of the Ukrainian people—hold the enemy’s blows steadfastly, striking back mercilessly and steadily advancing toward victory. The military experience and heroic achievements of Ukraine’s defenders are a testament to the strength of the proud traditions of Ukraine’s army, ever ready to repel the aggressor. They also affirm our resolve to restore control over the Crimean Peninsula.
It is no coincidence that on this day, St. Nicholas also visits Ukrainian families. Known as the patron not only of children and youth but also of sailors and warriors, St. Nicholas is a figure of protection and care. Today, both the youngest and eldest Ukrainians will pray to him to safeguard every one of our Heroes and take them under his care.
The world and all of Ukraine know of the heroism of our Armed Forces. In the areas where the occupier treads on our native soil—in the Crimean Peninsula and other territories occupied by Russia—people hold onto the hope of liberation from Russian occupation. We know that soon the Ukrainian flag will once again fly proudly over Simferopol and other cities, and the glory of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which includes many servicemen from the Crimean Peninsula, will echo throughout every corner of the region.
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine! Glory to Ukrainian heroes!
