On May 18, at 6:30 pm, a discussion “Culture of Memory: How We Talk About the Genocide of the Crimean Tatars” will take place within the PEN Discussion Club. The online discussion will take place via Facebook pages: PEN Ukraine, Ukrainian Week, Ukrainian Institute, Krym.Realii.
The discussion is organized by the PEN Ukraine in partnership with the Ukrainian Institute and is dedicated to the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Crimean Tatar Genocide.
What are the consequences of the genocide of the Crimean Tatars? What is the perception of deportation in the Ukrainian environment? What are the traditions of honoring the victims of genocide in Crimea? These and other questions will be answered by:
- Gulnara Bekirova – historian, candidate of political sciences, member of the Ukrainian PEN Club, author and TV presenter;
- Anton Drobovych – chairman of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance;
- Bekir Mamutov – editor-in-chief and political columnist of the republican independent newspaper “Къырым” (published since 1989 in Simferopol), public figure, publicist, literary editor, translator;
- Valentina Samar – Chief Editor of Crimea’s Center for Investigative Journalism.
The conversation will be moderated by Alim Aliev, Deputy Director General of the Ukrainian Institute.
