On 9 May, Ukraine celebrates Europe Day together with the member states of the European Union. This national holiday was established by Presidential Decree No. 266/2023, issued on 8 May 2023. The document states:
“Recognizing the European identity of the Ukrainian people, with the aim of strengthening the unity of European nations, ensuring peace, security, and stability on the European continent, reaffirming commitment to the ideals and values of democracy, and supporting initiatives of youth and other civic organizations, I hereby decree to establish Europe Day in Ukraine, to be observed annually on 9 May, jointly with the member states of the European Union.”
Ukrainian society has clearly defined its political direction and core values. Respect for human rights, the principles of democracy, and the rule of law form the foundation of the country’s domestic and foreign policy. Despite significant challenges, Ukraine continues to uphold its political agency, ensures the security of its partners, and demonstrates its readiness for full participation in European integration processes.
Crimea is part of this process. After de-occupation, the peninsula is expected to become a platform for the development of institutions, Indigenous peoples’ rights, tourism infrastructure, and regional security in the Azov-Black Sea region.
In this context, it is important to note that Crimea hosted its first Europe Day celebration in 2007, even before the occupation of the peninsula. A large-scale Eurovillage was held on the Yalta promenade, where European countries showcased their culture, tourism, and cuisine. Embassy stands were set up, alongside public debates, exhibitions, language workshops, sports events, and a concert featuring VV, Druha Rika, and the Eric Bell Band. During the same period, the Yalta European Strategy (YES) held a strategic discussion at Livadia Palace, focusing on Ukraine’s European integration prospects.
Today, Ukraine remains an active participant in the European political process. The liberation of all occupied territories, including Crimea, and accession to the European Union are strategic goals enshrined in both state policy and public demand. Europe Day serves as a tool for consolidating the shared future of Ukraine and Europe.
Happy Europe Day, Ukraine!
