On March 20, 2025, Oleksandr Bastrykin passed away at the age of 63. He was an active member of the Karaite religious community of Crimean Karaites in Kyiv, a person of sincere faith, remarkable diligence, and deep devotion to his culture and family.
Oleksandr Bastrykin was born on October 31, 1961, in Kyiv to a family of thermal power engineers. In 1978, he graduated from a specialized mathematics school and, driven by his aspiration to become a builder, began his career as a reinforced concrete structure installer and welder. Thanks to his perseverance and professionalism, he was recommended for studies at the Kyiv Engineering and Construction Institute, where he specialized in industrial ventilation and air conditioning.
Throughout his life, Oleksandr Bastrykin worked on the construction of key energy facilities across Ukraine. From 1982 to 1984, he served in a construction battalion of the Soviet Army in southern Kazakhstan. Upon the recommendation of the UNESCO Mission in Ukraine, he participated in projects at the Artek International Children’s Center in Crimea from 1989 to 1995.
Spiritual and community engagement held a special place in Oleksandr Volodymyrovych’s life. As a member of the Karaim Religious Community of Crimean Karaites in Kyiv and the Kyiv National Cultural Center of Crimean Karaites Dogunma, he actively supported community life, dreamed of establishing a Karaite building for the Kyiv kenesa, and hoped to contribute to its restoration personally.
Oleksandr Volodymyrovych was consistently involved in community events and initiatives aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of the Crimean Karaite people. His genuine dedication, wisdom, and heartfelt commitment to the common good left a lasting impression and warm memories among all who had the privilege of working and communicating with him.
