Even under relentless pressure, Crimea remains unbroken. Its residents risk their freedom and lives to resist, while Russia uses repression, fabricated court cases, and killings as standard tools of control. Over years of occupation, violence against everything Ukrainian has become a grim daily reality.
As part of the #ResistanceMovement initiative, together with the National Resistance Center (@sprotyv_official), we document the stories of those who have maintained their identity and refused to renounce Ukraine. We also gather evidence of the occupying administration’s crimes against civilians. These testimonies prove one thing: fear cannot destroy the longing for freedom, and resistance continues even in the darkest conditions.
- Bakhchysarai District: The FSB detained a local resident, accusing him of “cooperating with Ukrainian special services.” Russian authorities claim he provided information on Russian military positions, weaponry, and the peninsula’s socio-political situation.
- Political Sentencing: Another resident was sentenced to two years in prison for “public calls for extremist activity.” The “evidence” consisted of online comments that Russian security forces claimed incited violence.
- Volodymyr Yakymenko: Illegally sentenced to 15.5 years, Yakymenko is being forced to weave camouflage nets for the Russian army in prison. He has refused to support the war against his country, resulting in constant psychological pressure and provocations from the prison administration.
- “High Treason” for a Donation: A Russian “court” in Crimea sentenced a woman from the occupied Mykhailivka district (Zaporizhzhia region) to 11 years in a penal colony. Her “crime” was donating 1,200 rubles to a fund supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine in July 2023.
Despite the danger, a systematic resistance network remains active. This is not just isolated defiance; it is a coordinated effort. A primary example is the Yellow Ribbon movement. Through stickers, leaflets, and symbols, activists reclaim public spaces and remind the world that Crimea is Ukraine. Most recently, Yellow Ribbon activists held symbolic actions across occupied territories to mark Taras Shevchenko’s birthday. In Simferopol, Alushta, and Sevastopol, the poet’s words — “Fight, and you shall overcome” — appeared in public spaces, serving as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for unity and freedom.
