On 22 December 2018 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution “Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine”, initiated by Ukraine in co-authorship with 29 states.
According to the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nation, the main points of the document are:
- affirming that the seizure of Crimea by force is illegal and a violation of international law, and affirming that those territories must be returned.
- condemning Russia’s political motivated persecution of Ukraine’s nationals and call on Russian authorities to release Ukrainians that have been unlawfully held by the Russian side”.
- recognition as political prisoners Oleg Sentsov, Volodymyr Balukh, and Emir-Huseyn Kuku;
- condemning the forced citizenship by the RF, involvement into military operations as well as holding of illegal elections;
- the RF is called on to provide access of independent doctors from the international healthcare institutions as well as Ukrainian authorities to the Ukrainian citizens, illegally detained in the Russian territory and Crimea;
- the RF is called on to refrain from the criminalization of the right to freedom of expression and the right of freedom to assembly, to end discrimination of those who do not recognize the occupation;
- the international organizations and specialized UN agencies are required to indicate the Ukrainian peninsula in the official documents as “the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation”;
- the UN Secretary – General is requested to prepare the report regarding the implementation of the present resolution and to develop the recommendations for further activities.
Sixty-five UN member-states voted for the resolution, 27 member states voted against.
