On September 4, 2021, Aziz’s home was searched by the FSB, after which he was taken to an unknown destination.
As a result, Aziz was charged with “aiding and abetting sabotage”. Together with him, journalist Asan Akhtemov, Aziz’s cousin, and Nariman Dzhelal, deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, were arrested.
A panel of the Russian-controlled Supreme Court of Crimea sentenced the Akhtemov brothers to imprisonment in a maximum security colony in the “gas pipeline bombing case” in the village of Perevalne in Crimea. Asan Akhtemov was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 500 thousand rubles. Aziz Akhtemov – 13 years with a similar fine.
According to Aziz, FSB officers tortured him with electricity and used force to obtain the necessary testimony.
Today, on the birthday of Aziz Akhtemov, we urge you to join the initiative “Letters to a Free Crimea” and write a letter to your brothers and other political prisoners who are illegally detained in the occupied Crimea or deported to the territory of the Russian Federation.
