The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a decree “Issues of Developing the Spelling of the Crimean Tatar Language”, which instructs the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience to develop the spelling of the Crimean Tatar language by September 30, 2024, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, educational and scientific institutions, and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.
The spelling should be developed using the Crimean Tatar language alphabet based on the Latin script approved by the Government in 2021. Once developed, the spelling should be reviewed by the National Commission for the Crimean Tatar Language and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for approval.
The development of the Crimean Tatar language spelling is an integral part of the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of the Crimean Tatar Language until 2032, which is coordinated by the National Commission for the Crimean Tatar Language.
The Permanent Representative Tamila Tasheva co-chaired this commission together with Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, and Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
Approval of the Crimean Tatar language spelling will help to normalize, study and preserve it. The transition of the Crimean Tatar language to the Latin script has been ongoing since Ukraine gained independence, and this process will soon be completed.
This year, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine began reprinting textbooks on the Crimean Tatar language and literature, introducing the use of the Latin alphabet.
