Today, our country celebrates Constitution Day, the only public holiday specified in the Constitution itself.
The main law of Ukraine was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on June 28, 1996. The Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada had to announce that the session would not end until the decision was made, and the meeting lasted almost a day. However, in the end, after 5 years of debate and consultations, 3 months of drafting and more than 6,000 amendments, Ukraine approved its Constitution, which the international community recognized as the most democratic in the world.
This decision legally enshrined Ukraine’s proclaimed independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Ukrainian language as the state language, the rights and freedoms of a citizen of a free country, and later its course toward a Euro-Atlantic future – all of which are things that keep a terrorist country awake at night.
Preamble, 14 chapters, 161 articles. Yes, this book may be far from being a #1 Times bestseller, but it is the most important book for Ukrainian citizens. For the tenth year in a row, Crimea has been resisting the occupiers, because the provisions of Article 2 have been stuck in the minds of all Ukrainians: “The territory of Ukraine within the existing border is integral and inviolable”.
We sincerely believe that at least once in their lives everyone has read the Constitution of Ukraine, and if not, today is a great opportunity: https://cutt.ly/6KDiqpS
Let the fundamental human rights and freedoms proclaimed there grow in our children from an early age. Let its lines be etched in our memory and once again become a symbol of national unity.
Happy Constitution Day of Ukraine!
