By Resolution No. 49 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated January 17, 2025, titled “On Renaming Certain Geographical Objects,” 22 geographical locations in temporarily occupied Crimea have been renamed, restoring most of them to their historical Crimean Tatar names.
The Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, played an active role in drafting the resolution. This included participation in consultations with stakeholders, verifying the proposed renaming list for compliance with legal standards, and facilitating additional communications.
The renaming initiative was conducted under the framework of the Law of Ukraine “On the Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policies in Ukraine and the Decolonization of Toponymy.” Overall, this resolution renamed more than a hundred geographical objects across Ukraine.
