On May 27, the Mission hosted a working meeting between Permanent Representative Olha Kuryshko and H.E. Mr. Masashi Nakagome, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine.
The meeting was also attended by Anna Sytnykova, Deputy Head of the Crimea Platform Department, along with Chief Consultants of the Department Nelia Hrynyshyn and Tetiana Nepomiashcha.

During the meeting, Permanent Representative Olha Kuryshko expressed gratitude to Japan for its consistent support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and thanked Ambassador Nakagome for his participation in the Mission’s events, including the Forum on the Day of Resistance to the Occupation of Crimea, the ceremony honoring the victims of the Crimean Tatar genocide, and others. She also emphasized the importance of Japan’s sanctions policy. In particular, she noted that last year, in support of international efforts to achieve global peace, the Government of Japan introduced additional sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities, including officials of the occupation administration of the Russian Federation in occupied Crimea.
The team of the Crimea Platform Department briefed the Ambassador on the current situation in occupied Crimea and shared information about the Mission’s efforts to develop reintegration policies related to Crimea. Special attention was given to the Strategy for the Recovery of Crimea after De-occupation. The discussion also highlighted the crimes committed by the occupiers: human rights violations in occupied Crimea, the deportation of children, militarization of the peninsula, and the destruction of cultural heritage, among others.

Special attention during the meeting was devoted to the importance of promoting Ukrainian studies in Japan, particularly those focused on Crimean Tatars. The Mission’s team shared information about the activities of the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies, established on the initiative of the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska.
The team also presented other initiatives to raise awareness about Crimea among Japanese audiences — efforts that seek to increase understanding of the peninsula’s history and dismantle Russian myths and narratives.
We express our sincere gratitude to Japan for its consistent support of Ukraine in various sectors, particularly in reconstruction and the defense of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
