Life before the detention
Enver Omerov was born on November 9, 1961, in the city of Fergana, Uzbekistan. Later, with his wife and children, he returned to his historical homeland, Crimea.
By training, Enver is an agronomist. He was an active member of his community, participating in the organization of religious holidays and supporting compatriots who faced pressure from Russian security forces.
Behind the Bars
On June 10, 2019, Enver Omerov was detained. On that day, he was traveling with his daughter, Fatma Ismailova—the wife of political prisoner Rustem Ismailov—to Rostov-on-Don, where a court hearing in his son-in-law’s case was scheduled. Two years before his arrest, Enver Omerov’s family had noticed that their house was under surveillance.
In January 2020, a Russian “court” sentenced Enver to 18 years of imprisonment. He was accused of alleged involvement in the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organization banned in Russia. The charges were based on recorded conversations in which the individuals involved allegedly discussed religious and socio-political issues.
Behind the Bars
Enver’s family has reported that due to his imprisonment, he has lost significant weight, appears exhausted, and is in need of medical attention. He also suffers from a number of chronic conditions, including chronic tonsillitis, intercostal neuralgia, hypotension, and joint disease.
