Today the press center of the Office of the President of Ukraine hosted a presentation of the results of the omnibus “Thoughts and views of Ukrainian population regarding an armed conflict in Ukraine”, held to identify public opinion on the development of state policy in protection of human rights during the armed conflict in Ukraine.
“This survey is important in the work of the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the working group on reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories of the Law Reform Commission to implement transitional justice policies and approaches known in the world as transitional justice. This is an important path from armed conflict to peace, which is passed by any country that is in a state of armed conflict. Currently, the working group on reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories of the Law Reform Commission, which I chair, has submitted the concept of the relevant policy to the Office of the President of Ukraine, and the text of it is being worked out. It is extremely important for us to know whether such a policy is supported not only by the expert community, but also by the citizens of Ukraine, regardless of the region of residence. The results of the study directly indicate that we are on the right track.
Transitional justice, of course, is not just about justice, not just about the court. The policy involves four important elements: bringing those responsible for the most serious crimes to justice; the process of ordering a defendant to compensate the victim for losses suffered as a result of the crime; the process of establishing the truth, investigating violations that took place during the conflict; institutional reform process to ensure that such violations do not recur”, – the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Anton Korynevych.
